“I've traveled to some truly incredible places...”

Who is Hamish Broughton?

For as long as I can remember I’ve been fascinated by travelling. My father is a conservationist and explorer, so we travelled a lot as family when I was growing up. I caught the travel bug from a young age and I’ve been lucky enough to visit some incredible and unusual places. While today I spend most of my time in London, my appetite for travel is no less voracious. In 2017, I launched the website mytravelfix.com as a way to capture my experiences and share my adventures. Since then, I’ve been all over the world, taking photos, writing articles and collaborating with organisations like Stay Chic to try excite people about the wonders of travel.

What motivates you to travel?

In one word: adventure. It’s a big world out there and it’s full of fascinating cultures, delicious food and captivating landscapes just waiting to be explored. There is nothing worse than being stuck in one place for too long. I need to be able to get my travel fix or else I’ll go bananas! Ghaniya Dewi Arassyi put it best: « adventure may hurt you but monotony will kill you ».

What was your first trip as an adult?

In 2010, I spent several months exploring south-east Asia, starting in the rainforests of Malaysian Borneo and ending in the mountains of nothern Vietnam. It was an incredible experience that I’ll never forget. I spent three months living under the rainforest canopy which was a truly humbling experience. It was a privilege to visit such a unique environment. Who knows how much longer these extraordinary habitats will continue to exis? While it certainly lacked the comforts of my more recent travels, it was one of the best things I have ever done.

Do you have a favourite destination?

I always struggle to answer this question as there are so many places that I’m fond of. If I had to narrow it down, I’ve always had a soft spot for India. The richness of its culture, the scent, the food – it is an attack on the senses that you just can’t find anywhere else in the world. Sticking closer to home, Italy is quickly becoming a personal favourite. Having spent so much time there recently writing for Stay Chic, I have really fallen in love with its intrinsic beauty and charm.

You clearly have a love for food – Where did you have your best meal ever?

The best meal I’ve ever had was in Iceland. It’s not necessarily a country famed for its dining but, in spring 2015, I took a trip to Reykjavik and stumbled upon a small local restaurant on the water-front. I sat there overlooking the ocean and watched the sun slowly dipping below the snow-capped horizon. For hours I feasted on a mpouth-watering array of Icelandic delicacies from freshly caught catfish to smoked reindeer and Kjötsupa – the traditional lamb meat soup.

What is your ultimate tip for those wanting more from their travel experiences?

As important as it is to plan your trips, I think that it’s also important to be spontaneous. For me, part of the fun is in the adventure itself. I always tell people to put away their guide books and just get out there and explore. Go out into the streets and see what you can find. You will be amazed at the multitude of hidden experiences. Often these end up being the ones you will treasure the most.
